A Message from Your H.S.A. President
Merry Christmas, Families!
This is truly one of my most favorite times of the year. That saying seems so cliché as we hear it in passing so often. Have you ever stopped to think why people feel this way? After all, we hear so many people talking about how busy they are getting ready for this one day – all of this work for one day – why do we do it? For me, I do it for the total fulfillment it brings me to see my children, family, friends, and co-workers’ smiles when we take a moment to focus on each other. As I now have children who are older, I love taking the opportunity to teach them what it truly means to give back to our community, family, and friends, especially during this season. Showing them how to live the life Jesus wants us to live by making others happy and not just focusing on our own needs is one of life’s best lessons. For me, watching my children serve others through opportunities at school, in church, or simply at home by making something for someone, is the greatest Christmas gift I could receive. My prayer for each of our SMS families this season is that you find that special moment and cherish it as life is not made up of the material gifts but truly of the special moments that will forever leave a smile in your heart.
In an effort of ensuring financial transparency to you, our families, I wanted to recap our fundraising efforts to date. Our Fall Festival netted approximately $52,000 which is in the ballpark of what was raised last year! Our Trunk or Treat numbers are still being finalized but we know we have done well. We are off to a great start and are currently on track to hitting our donation to the school. We can’t do it without each of you, so THANK YOU!
This month, the HSA which includes every family in the school, provided Visa gift cards to the classroom teachers to assist them in restocking their classroom supplies. This classroom support was only possible due to the very successful start we’ve had with our fundraising efforts. On behalf of the families and the HSA executive committee, I want to thank the teachers for everything they do to keep the classrooms looking their best! We, the HSA, also appreciate the many words of thanks we received from the teachers.
The month of January is going to be a busy and fun for our students and families. We will be holding the online auction for our class projects the week of January 21st. The students, room parents, and teachers have been creating a memorable class item which will be cherished by one lucky family in the homeroom. More bidding information will be forthcoming in January. The last week of the month is Catholic Schools Week! On Wednesday the 30th, the HSA will provide a FREE hot dog lunch to the students. And to culminate CSW celebration, the HSA is treating the students to a skating session at Ice World (skate rentals not included, but are only $3 per skater) on Friday, February 1st following the early dismissal.
Have you heard and read about our Designer Bag Bingo scheduled for the evening of February 1st!? This event is going to be a wonderful night out for all of our adult friends. The committee has been working very diligently to bring you great prizes, a new dinner option catered by Conrad’s, and an awesome jackpot game whose prize is $1,000 cash! We have also listened to the many requests to make ticket purchases available online. You can purchase your tickets for this event online through Event Brite using this link: http://smsbingo.eventbrite.com. Don’t forget to order your delicious meal. Beer and wine will be available for purchase at the event. Please do not bring outside alcohol to the event.
If you like to bake or cook, we would love to have you join a new committee we are forming at SMS! Please consider being part of our hospitality committee. This is a great way for you to give back to the school from home. There will be a few times during the year in which we ask you to bake or cook an item to support an activity at school such as open houses. You will simply send in your goodie the morning of the event with you child. If you are interested in joining this committee, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Our first event will be on January 30th for the Open House.
Since my 7th grader is reading Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol, I think I will leave you with another quote from this classic….”For it is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child himself.”.
Merry Christmas to All!
